A Model for the Classification
of the Denominations of
the Christian Church


Based on the theological, cultural, and ecclesiological characteristics of the denominational institutions that constitute the Church




Primary Doctrinal Beliefs of the Christian Churches Included in This Model

To be included in this model, the members of the institutions classified are required by the faith community to subscribe to the following:

  • Theology: The members subscribe to the Trinitarian formula of understanding the nature of God, such that God is seen as the Creator of the Universe (the Father), the Redeemer of sinful humanity (the Son), and the giver of all life (the Holy Spirit).
  • Christology: The members subscribe to the Athanasian understanding of the nature of Christ, such that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who was incarnated by the power of the Father through the Blessed Virgin Mary into full humanity. As such, Jesus is both fully and equally divine as well as fully and equally human.
